About This Lesson

The following lesson plan was developed as part of the Culturally Sustaining Education: The Micronesian Context professional development workshop held 24-26 July 2018. The workshop was held in Guam and made possible by the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai`i at Mānoa in partnership with Chaminade University of Honolulu’s Center for Teaching and Learning, the Department of CHamoru Affairs and the Senator Antonio Palomo Guam Museum and Educational Facility, the College of Micronesia, Alik Translation Services, and Guampedia. All lesson plans developed as part of this series were authored by a Guam-based educator with contributions from workshop facilitators.

Description

With this activity, students will identify foods and customs/traditions from their culture.

Anticipatory set

Using post-its, pose questions about kinds of food that are staples in our cultures and traditions each of us have.

  • What kinds of food do we eat for celebrations? Holidays?
  • What traditions do we have in our cultures for celebrations? Holidays?

**Students will write their answers on post-its and put their responses on a T-chart.

  1. Teacher will show students teacher-made book of foods and traditions of his/her culture; includes pictures, drawings, labels (in native language) cultural celebrations and holidays.
  2. Teacher will show Breadfruit and Open Spaces video to view some of the foods that we the Micronesian people eat.
  3. Teacher will then open up the link for Guampedia and browse through the various links that showcase traditions of the different cultures found in Micronesia, Philippines and other Asian countries.
  4. Once the video and Internet links have been viewed, explain to the students that they will be creating a book of foods and traditions of our cultures (they can draw, get pictures from internet, use newspapers or magazines) with the help of teacher and parents.
  5. Students can work in pairs or individually to create their books.
  6. Students will present finished products (books) to peers and will use as a display for United Nations Day to be held in October.
