For 30 years, from 1960 to 1990, the Guam Museum was under the administration of the Guam Public Library. During most of those years Magdalena S. Taitano was the island’s territorial librarian. Taitano was also the first CHamoru to earn a Master’s degree in library sciences.

Besides her many achievements as a librarian, Taitano oversaw the work of the Guam Museum, then at the Garden House, Plaza de España. The museum was designated the official repository and custodian of historical artifacts of Guam, and eventually separated from the Guam Public Library in the early 1990s.

Taitano retired from the Guam Library in 1987, but continued her work dealing with archives and other collections over the next ten years at the University of Guam’s Robert F. Kennedy Library and the Micronesian Area Research Center.
