Annotated Bibliography. World War II in the Marianas (1941-1945) played a significant role in shaping the islands today. Many papers, articles and books have been written about this era of Marianas history. The following is a list of World War II books that include information about the war in the Mariana Islands, compiled by historian Dave Lotz, as of 2021.
4th Marianas History Conference
The fourth Marianas History Conference, “Commemorating Our Histories,” was held at the University of Guam from Saturday, August 31 – Sunday, September 1, 2019.
3rd Marianas History Conference 2017
The third Marianas History Conference was held in Garapan, Saipan September 1-2, 2017. The conference, featuring 36 presentations on Marianas History, had originally been scheduled for September 4-6, 2015. Unfortunately, Typhoon Soudelor hit Saipan August 2 and the conference had to be postponed.
Manila Galleon Trade Route-La Nao de China: A Legacy in the Marianas
First Global Trade Route in the Pacific. From 1565 to 1815, Spanish galleons sailed the Pacific Ocean between Acapulco in New Spain (now Mexico) and Manila in the Philippine islands. In between these two far flung colonies lay the Mariana Islands, known then as Las Islas de Los Ladrones, which became a stepping stone between the Americas and Asia.

One Archipelago, Many Stories. In 2011 a group of like minded people from the Mariana Islands decided it was high time to have a Marianas History Conference, one that focused specifically on the history and experiences of the people of all the Mariana Islands.
2nd Marianas History Conference
51 Papers and Posters on Marianas History. The University of Guam, Guam Preservation Trust, Guampedia, and the Northern Marianas Humanities Council hosted the 2nd Marianas History Conference on the UOG Campus in Mangilao, Guam, from August 30-31.
1st Marianas History Conference
The conference theme, “One Archipelago, Many Stories,” highlighted the deep and rich history of the Mariana Islands. It also bridged the political division of the archipelago which dates to the late 19th century.
Hinanao: Travelers and Descendants of Travelers
The word hinanao refers to “travel” and “travelers.” The Mariana Islands have hosted a multitude of travelers over the centuries such as Spanish Galleons, whaling ships, and the US Navy. In turn, CHamorus/Chamorros traveled out from the Marianas to other parts of Micronesia and the world for economic opportunities, education, and of course, adventure.
Section 6: CHamoru Renaissance
Cultural preservation is an important aspect of self-determination. For modern day descendants of Indigenous cultures, links to the past demonstrate unity, identity, distinctiveness, and relevance in a global world. We rely on our past to give us a sense of who we are and how we identify ourselves in relation to others. Likewise, we draw upon the past to understand our responsibility to care for our historical and cultural resources so that they can be passed onto future generations.
